RV Modifications
RV Modifications Page
I don't think anyone who RVs is 100% happy with their rig. There is always something you want to change, or think would be better if it were just a little different. Some people go all out and totally remodel their RV, which others make a few minor tweaks here and there. What follows are some of the smaller projects we've done to make our rig work better for us. Major renovations will end up as a post, but for some of these minor changes, I think a few lines and a couple of snap shots will be enough. Maybe what we've done will inspire you to do something to your rig.
Bye Bye Couch.
This was the first mod we made to the camper. The wife is a sewer and quilter, so we wanted to make a space in the camper for her to sew when we were on the road. The space where the jack knife couch went was perfect. Since we don't like anyone, removing it wasn't going to be an isse since we don't want overnight guests anyway.
I don't have any pics of the removal process, but I do have some shots of the space it made available for us once it was removed.
So much more room for activities
A few screws and it lifted out easily. I was very happy with how easy it was to remove, since this was the first time I'd tried anything like this and was worried that it would be secured in there some strange way that would require a chisel and sledge hammer to remove.
Back Closet Storage Bins
The rear closet in our rig, back in the bathroom, has a hanging rod and is otherwise a massive hole. We don't travel long term (yet) and so don't really have much in the way of hanging garments that we carry. The forward bed area has a small closet on each side that also has a hanging rod, so most of the space in the rear closet was being wasted. We had a few items back there, but they sat on the bottom of the closet just sliding around.
We were looking for some sort of shelving or bin system that we could mount on the back wall of the closet to give us a little more organization. We found what we wanted at Lowe's. It's part of the Kobalt rail system. Essentially you get a black plastic rail, and then cut this to fit. Then you hang any of a number of storage items from it.
Cutting the rails
We only needed one, since the space we were working with was pretty short. Some maneuvering was required since the vent pipe for the black tank runs up through this closet.
The rail cut and installed
Once you have the rails mounted, then you just need to hang the storage items. The bins we got snap in, so we don't think they're going to be going anywhere.
The bins
We think this has already improved the storage and organization of this closet, and we haven't even been out on a trip with them yet.
Bins in place
Bedroom Remodel
The bedroom remodel was a bigger project, so it got several posts.Bedroom Remodel Part 1

Propane Detector Switch
We had some issues when we first bought the rig that involved the propane detector draining the battery. This little project was to resolve that issue.
