How much is enough?
The first year we got our camper we went out a good bit. The second year we were shopping for a house and then moving, so we didn't get to do any camping that year. The next year we only managed to get out a couple of times.
I often wonder how many days of camping are enough to really warrant the expense of the camper. We got a deal on our camper, so we don't have payments, but towing it incurs more in fuel costs than normal driving. I only own the truck so that I can tow a camper (it was the plan when I got the truck). We don't keep the camper at the house, so there are storage fees.
I'd like to think, even counting all of that, if I get a couple of weeks a year camping, I'm doing pretty good. We managed to get a long weekend in early Spring this year, but we might not get another trip until Late summer or early fall. We are taking a trip to the opposite coast in July, but it's not nearly long enough to be able to drive it with the camper.
I like having the camper, as a back up plan in the event we need to vacate the house for some reason. Even if it's driveway camping it would be a lot cheaper than having to get a hotel. We've toyed with the idea of using it as a guest room when people come to visit, since we tend to use all of the space in our house where guests might normally stay in a house.
I guess the question is, do I think the trailer is worth the costs? So far, yes. We've managed a week here and there. I'd like to maybe take a couple of weeks just to see if we could handle camper living for a longer term. Eventually, when the wife and I are both retired, I'd like to maybe snow bird, or try living full time in an RV. Maybe not the camper we have now, but something that would give us that freedom.
I see so many RVs in driveways that never seem to move. That is a lot of money to spend on something and then never use it. Maybe they used it when they first got it and then due to circumstances can't now, but it seems counter to the purpose of the RV to hold onto something like that if it's just going to sit in your driveway.
What about you? How much time to you think is really needed to justify owing your RV. Do you want to be on the road more, or are you getting enough out of it with your current camping volume?
Let me know in the comments, I'd love to hear from you.
